The City of Selkirk Planning Division supports development through a coordinated, in-house approach that includes planning review, zoning guidance, permitting and application processing, inspections, and approvals such as variances and conditional uses.
Selkirk has long demonstrated a forward-thinking approach to shaping its own future. In 2021, the City established its own planning division to align land use planning with local priorities, streamline processes, and improve development outcomes. On May 1, 2022, the City of Selkirk launched its Planning Division, the City’s first dedicated planning department since 1977. Staffed with a full-time planner and building inspector, the division allows the City to directly manage land use planning, zoning, and building permits, improving consistency, efficiency, and responsiveness to local development needs.
We provide comprehensive planning and development services to citizens, developers, and builders. From permits and approvals to inspections and ongoing guidance, the Division ensures that projects comply with regulations while keeping the process clear, efficient, and responsive.
We conduct inspections at various phases of a project to ensure construction aligns with approved plans, including applicable codes, regulations, and by-laws. These evaluations are essential for maintaining safety and compliance standards throughout the building process.
A Zoning By-Law establishes specific regulations for how land can be used and developed. A Zoning By-Law Amendment, or Rezoning, modifies the By-Law by adding, altering, or deleting parts of it. The scope of the amendment can vary, affecting either an individual property or the entire City.
Depending on your development and/or building project, you may need several permits that allow you to proceed with construction. Prior to submitting your application please ensure the Application Review Fee and any applicable documents are submitted at the same time.
A variance is an order that varies specific provision(s) of a Zoning By-Law as they apply to a particular property. Variance application(s) can be submitted by anyone who believes that a Zoning By-Law adversely affects their property rights.
A Conditional Use permits certain land or building uses in a particular zone under the current City of Selkirk Zoning By-Law. To help minimize potential land use conflicts, Council may impose specific conditions on these uses.
